Are people living in poverty responsible for their food choices?

I was asked yesterday, following on from my £1 a day week:

Isn't it up to the person to make better decisions. They can't afford to eat well because we see them with an iPhone and big TV and satellite dishes.

I only had a minute to respond to this (just about enough time to say no that is not the case and government benefits do not leave enough for either of those things, let alone a balanced diet).

But I've been thinking about it ever since….

The people I know who can't afford to eat properly sacrifice their food so they can pay their bills, buy their children school supplies, keep up with their rent.

Poverty is nasty because it leaves you exhausted and without resources to make better choices or to find a new way of doing things.

I watched a clip which explains it well
